One of the books of the Women of the Underworld series by Kelley Armstrong, Waking the Witch follows 21-year-old witch Savannah Levine.

Savannah is the orphaned daughter of Eve Levine, a half demon/witch, and Kristoff Nast, a sorcerer who’s family doesn’t acknowledge his only daughter, and who’s guardians are Paige Winterbourne and Lucas Cortez. This is the first book in the series that has Savannah narrating the book, though we have come across her throughout the series.

After Paige and Lucas go on a ‘vacation’ to Hawaii, Savannah is left in charge of their Private investigation company. She takes on a case that another Supernatural, Jesse Aanes, came to ask for help from Lucas with because it shows signs of having supernatural aspects to it. It’s her first mission, and she’s hoping to be able to prove to Paige and Lucas that she can be alone on cases instead of being stuck at the office.

The case brings Savannah to a small town where everyone knows everyone, and no one likes the idea of a PI snooping around for answers in the deaths of two local girls and a girl who joined the local commune who make and sell cookies. The police believe it’s the work of a serial killer, but are keeping tight lipped about anything else.

Along with learning a lot about the town and it’s citizens, Savannah learns a lot of valuable lessons about investigating and about herself. As independent as she is, she learns quickly that everyone needs backup.

While unearthing the murderer of the girls, Savannah also unearths a threat to herself: a witch hunter. Although, she doesn’t believe that’s what it is at first. She maybe have figured that little tidbit out a little late, and doesn’t caught the witch hunter by the end of Waking the Witch.

By the end of the book, old “friends” come back into Savannah’s life to threaten it. Savannah makes a decision unlike anything her Mother would have done, and threatens to lose her life in the process. The cliffhanger at the end of the book is a true cliffhanger, and has me begging to get to the next Savannah narrated story as quickly as this Bookworm can.
